A tile shower is built in layers. The walls and the floor get a waterproofing layer first, and the tile goes on top. On the floor we use an uncoupling and waterproofing membrane. That is the orange sheet in our photos, down before any tile is set.
Many homeowners pick large-format porcelain for the walls, which means fewer grout lines. It also means the wall has to be flat first, so we fix the high and low spots. Then we set a laser line and work off it. That is how the joints stay straight to the ceiling.
A built-in niche is part of that same waterproofed wall. We tile it to match the walls, and the shelf gets a pitch so water runs off. Ceilings get tile when the shower is fully enclosed, the way the one in our photos was done. Shower floors usually take a smaller tile, because small pieces follow the pitch of the floor.
St. Petersburg has a lot of 1950s to 1970s block houses and 1920s bungalows. Their floors are rarely flat. Under the carpet in a block ranch you often find terrazzo, and in bungalows, old flooring. What sits under your floor decides how the tile goes down, so we check first.
Floor prep is most of the work. That can mean pulling old tile, grinding down a high spot, or pouring a self-leveling coat. Once the floor is flat we dry-lay the pattern so the small cuts land at the wall. When tile is not the right pick for a room, vinyl plank and laminate are the other floors we install.
A backsplash changes how a kitchen looks without touching the cabinets. We do backsplash installation on its own or as part of a kitchen update. We work around the counter, the window trim and the range wall. The tile gets cut around switches and outlets so the plates sit flat.
Layout is the part homeowners never see, and it is the part that shows later. We measure the room, find the center, and work out where the cut tiles land. A good layout keeps a full tile at the doorway. The thin cuts go under the vanity or behind the door.
Then the laser goes up. It gives us a level line across the whole wall, which matters in older houses where nothing is square. We work to that line instead of to the floor, so the grout joints stay straight.
Grout and sealing finish the job. We pick a grout color with you, since it changes the look as much as the tile. Cement grout on floors gets sealed once it cures. Then we wipe the haze off, caulk the corners where grout tends to crack, and clean up.
